It depends where you live. PAK'nSAVE usually has the lowest shelf prices on a standard basket, but “is it worth the trip?” weighs the whole cost of a shop — groceries plus petrol plus your time — so once the drive is counted the cheapest all-in store can be your nearest New World or Woolworths.

Is it cheaper to drive to PAK'nSAVE than shop locally?

Accepted Answer

Not always. A cheaper store only saves money if the drive doesn’t eat the saving. The tool prices your basket at your nearest PAK'nSAVE, New World and Woolworths, adds the return drive (your cents per km) and your time (your dollars per hour), and compares the all-in totals.

How do you compare supermarket prices fairly?

We read the same public shelf prices shown on each retailer’s own website, match identical products on brand, exact pack size and name, compare on normalised price per unit, and only count items stocked at all three of your nearest stores. House brands are never silently cross-matched — those are declared in a published equivalence table.
