Questions people ask

Is it worth driving to a cheaper supermarket?

It depends on how far away it is. A cheaper store only saves you money if the drive does not eat the saving. As of 23 Oct 2026, PAK'nSAVE is on average 9.0% cheaper than Woolworths across 7,725 products both chains sell in the same brand and pack size (typically 4,535 in any one area), about $9.00 in every $100. Woolworths is still cheaper on about one product in five. But in our Huntly example the nearest PAK'nSAVE is 31 km away, and the return drive costs about as much as the $12 it saves on the basket. Set your location and we add the drive and your time to each store's grocery total, so you can see which shop is cheapest all-in.

How do you get the supermarket prices?

We read the same shelf prices you would see on each supermarket's own public website, with no login and nothing behind a paywall. They are what you would pay at the till, specials included. Products are matched on brand, exact pack size and name, and compared per kg, per litre or each. Where a staple only comes as each chain's own brand or as fresh produce, we use a published equivalence table rather than guessing. How we compare prices fairly.

How often are the prices updated?

Every night. Prices are read overnight, once a night, with light, well-spaced requests. The prices on the site right now are from 23 Oct 2026.

Which supermarkets do you compare?

PAK'nSAVE, New World and Woolworths: 57 PAK'nSAVE, 149 New World and 180 Woolworths stores across New Zealand. The meat map also compares Mad Butcher, per kg. Woolworths Club prices are off by default, because you need an Everyday Rewards card to get them; turn them on if you have one.

Is it free?

Yes. It is an independent, free New Zealand tool, no retailer pays us, and you do not need an account to compare prices. A free account is optional, for saving your basket and lists.

How is the cost of the drive worked out?

When you set your location we find your nearest PAK'nSAVE, New World and Woolworths by road and work out the return drive to each. The distance is charged at your running cost per km ($0.20 a km for fuel only by default, up to $0.83 for the full cost of running a car, or nothing for an EV) and the drive time at what your time is worth (nothing by default, or $15, $30 or $60 an hour). Both are added to each store's grocery total to give the all-in cost. How that compares with the IRD mileage rate.
