Cheapest bread in NZ

← Back to the comparison

A loaf is not a loaf. Sliced bread ranges from about 600 g to 750 g and the cheapest-looking price is often the smallest bag. Everything here is compared per kilogram, from the same shelf prices each supermarket publishes, so a bigger loaf at a slightly higher price shows up as the better buy that it is.

Sliced and packaged bread

The weekly loaf. The table is sorted by price per kilogram, with the pack price beside it so you can see both. The gap between the first row and the twelfth is usually larger than the gap between chains on the same loaf, so which loaf you pick matters more than which shop you pick.

Wraps, pita and flatbread

Wraps are sold by the pack and the packs vary from six to twelve, which makes them the easiest bread to overpay for. Compare on the per-kilogram column and ignore the pack price.

Buns and rolls

Burger buns and hot dog rolls are usually four or six to a pack. The per-kilogram figure again does the fair comparison; a six-pack of small buns can cost more per kilo than a loaf of good bread.

Questions people ask

What is the cheapest bread in NZ?

Per kilogram, the supermarkets' own-brand white and wholemeal sliced loaves are almost always the cheapest bread on the shelf, followed by the budget tiers of the big bakery brands. The table on this page is rebuilt every night from live shelf prices and sorted per kilogram, so the top row is the cheapest loaf today at Auckland prices.

Why compare bread per kilogram instead of per loaf?

Because loaves are different sizes. A 700 g loaf at a slightly higher price than a 600 g loaf is cheaper bread. Per-kilogram pricing is the same shelf-edge unit price the supermarkets themselves print, and it is the only way to compare a loaf with a pack of wraps or a bag of rolls.

Is bread cheaper at PAK'nSAVE, New World or Woolworths?

On an identical loaf the chains are usually within a few cents of each other, and the order flips with specials. The bigger saving is choosing a cheaper loaf per kilogram, not a cheaper shop. The summary line above each table says which chain has the most cheapest lines today.
