Laundry liquid comes in one, two and four litre bottles, powders in boxes from one to five kilos, and toilet paper in packs of four to forty-eight. The shelf-edge unit price cuts through all of it, and it is the column to read here. These lines also carry some of the widest price spreads between stores of anything in the supermarket.
Laundry, per litre and per kilogram
Liquids are compared per litre and powders per kilogram, and the two are not directly comparable: a concentrated liquid does more washes per litre than a standard one. Within each basis the ranking is fair. Big boxes and bottles are cheaper per unit almost without exception, so buy the largest size you can store.

Where are cleaning products cheapest in NZ?
Per unit, the supermarket own-brand lines are the cheapest laundry, dishwashing and surface cleaners at all three chains, and the largest pack is nearly always the cheapest per litre or per kilogram. Between chains the gaps on identical products are wider here than on food, so it is worth checking. The tables on this page are recomputed nightly and the summary line above each says which chain leads today.
Is laundry liquid or powder cheaper?
Per wash, standard powder is usually the cheapest, then concentrated liquid, then standard liquid. Per litre or per kilogram figures do not capture concentration, so compare liquids with liquids and powders with powders, and check the washes-per-pack number on the box.
How do I compare toilet paper prices?
By total sheets, or by metres, not by roll count. A 12-pack of long double-length rolls can be more paper than an 18-pack of short ones. The retailers' unit prices do not use a consistent basis for toilet paper, which is why this page shows pack price and pack size and leaves the arithmetic to you.
